Description
In the mirrors that line the walls of the shop, I glimpse myself clip-clopping down the crowded middle aisle. Painted words--Full Set, $20, Fill-In, $13, and so on--obscure my reflection, but I can see through the writing well enough to tell that I look pretty, and cheap. This is a double-edged surprise, one that distracts me so much I forget the Coke I meant to get from the refrigerator and wander closer to one mirrored wall to simply stare at my glossy pink lips and Wonder-bra cleavage. A younger version of my glitzy mother looks back, which disconcerts me in more ways than one. Mainly, I guess, it's because these last few years while I was slogging around the campus of Ithaca in hoodies and thick-soled sandals, I was very serious, very intelligent-looking. Never cheap. Also, though, not pretty. Ma may be onto something here. The clothes I have on--pink Capri pants, high heels--are borrowed from my sister Thuy, and Ma harangues me into wearing such things because she believes Americans come to the nail salon for a glamorous experience. I think Ma must be crazy, or blind. No woman in search of glamour would shuffle into the shop wearing dirty flip-flops and ratty gray sweatpants the way some of our customers do. I can't help but wonder at the way they come to us, fat and sloppy, with their hairy toes and prickly legs, their bushy eyebrows and careless ponytails, and expect our twenty dabs of color to make them beautiful.
