Description

BRIAN KOLMAN WAS forty-five years old. His hair had turned gray in his late thirties and he had refused to color it because he felt it finally made him appear successful, though on paper his six-figure income did little to erase the lease on two cars, his son's braces and his daughter's cellphone bill, or the outstanding debt on nineteen credit cards and a thirty-year mortgage on a four-bedroom house in suburban New Jersey. Brian was not a handsome man, but not a bad-looking one either: blue eyed, square jawed, with a nose slightly bigger than he would have preferred if he had been given a choice of styles. His short height kept him on the stocky side, but his workouts with a personal trainer kept his gut from swelling too large and kept him looking more "distinguished" than fatherly. Gina, Brian's wife, had lost her figure after the birth of their second child, Michelle, fourteen years ago, though their sex life had not begun sputtering until almost five years later, when Gina became convinced that Brian was having an affair with a co-worker (and which he wasn't). Gina's retaliation had not been to clamp her legs together or strap on a chastity belt; her revenge cut deeper, right into Brian's wallet where she knew it would hurt him most. She had developed expensive tastes and costly shopping habits, which had never bothered Brian as long as they were directed towards the welfare of his children, but irked him when it was used to try out a new hairdresser or day spa splurge for herself. And even though Gina kept herself and the children pampered and spoiled, she had let the housekeeping drift into a slovenly imbalance because she felt she deserved a maid.
